Thursday Dinners With Taste Hungary

Exploring Budapest through its gastronomy is always great, and when you can combine that with wine, then it’s one of those perfect travel experiences. Luckily, Tasting Table Budapest offers wine dinners on a weekly basis, where you can both taste some delicious Hungarian foods and learn about Hungarian wines.

A couple of weeks ago, we were invited to a Roma dinner, which turned out to be a truly multicultural experience with travelers from many countries. Gábor, one of the owners of Taste Hungary, gave us a warm welcome and the dinner started at 7pm sharp. Some of the courses had already been prepared, however, Magdi néni, our chef for the evening, was still kneading the dough for our dessert at the open kitchen.

To enhance the Roma cultural experience, Gábor invited two Roma musicians, a singer and a guitarist, who played traditional Roma songs during the first part of the dinner, including the Romani Anthem, also known as Jelem, Jelem, a beautiful and moving song about the Roma spirit.

The first course of our dinner was Gypsy Farmer’s Cheese Dip that came with bodag, a home-baked bread. It’s very similar to the Hungarian kőrözött, but this version had a lot of sour cream in it as well as tomato. The main course was Stuffed Peppers “Csobánka” style, again similar to the traditional Hungarian stuffed cabbage, except this came with lecsó, a sort of vegetable stew with onion, tomato and paprika. The dessert was delicious freshly baked Cinnamon Rolls (or Challah with cinnamon).

Of course, all the wines were carefully selected to match the courses, and all together, we tasted six different wines from Tokaj, Villány and Eger regions in Hungary and a Kadarka wine from Ménes, Romania.

Thursday dinners at Taste Hungary’s Tasting Table & Shop offer a great way to learn about Hungarian cuisine and Hungarian wines. These dinners are also very interactive, so you can ask your questions about the food and the wines any time. We also got the full list of the menu with detailed recipes as well as the wine list. And of course, after dinner, you can also purchase the wines at the shop.
