Cukorka and INSITU: Two Hidden Stores in a Passage

There are many passages in Budapest that come in handy when you’re in a hurry and need to take a shortcut. Sometimes, the two streets have completely different atmospheres and in this way, the journey through the Budapest passage has an even more special feeling to it. You can also find all sorts of interesting and fun places in these passages, such as a hidden café, or like in the Unger-House, a candy-, a design-, and a bookstore.

The Unger-House and its passage connects Múzeum krt. and Magyar Street. The passage leads you to 12 Magyar Street, which is a lot more quiet compared to the bustling Múzeum krt.

If you’re coming from Astoria, stay on the right side of Múzeum krt. and then take a right at number 7. Don’t forget to check out the facade of the building while you’re still on Múzeum krt., but the architecture of the passage is also worth taking a look at. Cukorka and INSITU will be on your right, while the bookstore will be on the opposite side.

Cukorka is candy store, presented in a 21st century setting. It opened about four years ago and probably this is the only candy store in the city where all the candies are made on the spot.

They have free candies for tasting with all kinds of flavors but before tasting anything, you’ll probably just want to take a couple of minutes to digest the sight of all the candies around you with the various shades of red, the color that dominates the little store.

The next store is INSITU (same owner as Cukorka) with different Hungarian designers’ products, such as jewellery, clothing, decoration, etc. The store is excellent if you want to check out the works of well-known Hungarian designers, but this place is also excellent if you want to buy some souvenirs. Don’t forget to take a look at the upstairs area, too.
