When you walk around in Budapest you usually don’t get to see what is behind the facades. If you’re not from Hungary, you might not even know that most of the buildings have an inner courtyard. Since only the tenants have access to the buildings, the courtyards unfortunately remain hidden for the passers-by. But the good news is that there is a quiet café in Budapest, where you can experience the relaxing atmosphere of one of these authentic inner courtyards.
Café Arioso is on Király Street. It is a florist, an interior design store, and a café all in one. Arioso is in one of the oldest buildings on the street, built in the early 19th century. During WWII, the building was damaged, but it has been nicely renovated since then.
The courtyard is an average size with a small grass area and a parking lot for a couple of cars. While sitting at the outdoor area of the café, it’s hard to believe that the bustling Király Street is only a few meters away as you can only hear birds, maybe a lawn mower in the distance and some people talking in the store.

At Café Arioso, the service is nice and friendly and their latte is delicious. The cakes and pastries are not on the menu, so make sure you take a look at them when you enter the store. The design items are also worth checking out. We highly recommend that you visit Café Arioso if you want to discover an authentic early 19th century courtyard and/or if you want to get away from the noisy and busy city center.
